Hooligans Beggars and Thieves
Bozeman, Montana based band Hooligans is pleased to announce the release of its debut recording BEGGARS and THIEVES. Produced by Little Feat founder/keyboardist Bill Payne and Vootie Productions’ Tom Garnsey, the nine song recording features original material co-written by Garnsey and Payne, guitarist Bob Britten and late Hooligans guitarist David Troy, as well as a couple of carefully chosen covers from Richard Thompson and Natalie Merchant and a reworking of the Appalachian folk ballad “Katy Cruel”. Of special significance is “7th Daughter” one of sixteen songs co-written by Bill Payne and legendary Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter this past year. The record also features guest spots from Tim O’Brien on fiddle, New Orleans’ own Spencer Bohren on lap steel, Jimmy Lange on keyboards, reggae great Pato Banton on vocals and Alison Garnsey on backing vocals. Beggars and Thieves comfortably and seamlessly straddles several genres of music from rock to blues, reggae to folk and Americana, all filtered through decades of live performance to create a rootsy sound unique to Hooligans.
Beggars and Thieves was recorded over a couple of weeks in the fall of 2012 at Yellowstone House, an 1870’s log home on the banks of the Yellowstone River, with the towering Absaroka- Beartooth mountains looming over the proceedings and chicken burritos on the grille. The tracks were recorded and engineered by Grammy Award winner Cornell “Doc” Wiley, a Bozeman resident whose work includes U2, Prince, and Whitney Houston. Mastering for Beggars and Thieves was completed by multiple Grammy winner Gavin Lurssen at Lurssen Mastering whose credits include Robert Plant/Alison Krauss’s Raising Sand, The Who, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton and Phish, to list but a few.
Hooligans core lineup has been intact since the early 1990’s and includes Rich Robiscoe on bass, Tom Garnsey on guitars/vocals, Betsy Wise on vocals, Ron Craighead on drums/vocals, and Bob Britten on electric guitar/vocals. More recently the addition of Tom Murphy on mandolin/vocals and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Bill Payne (Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Seger, Paul Simon, James Taylor) have upped the musical ante and broadened the band’s sound. The significance of Payne’s contribution to the recording as the producer/keyboardist/singer and cowriter cannot be underestimated. Payne brings over 40 years of performance, production and recording skills to the table and they clearly are evident in the finished product Beggars and Thieves.
Genre-bending flexibility has provided countless opportunities for Hooligans to share the stage with some of Americas finest: The Band, Burning Spear, The Wailers, Michael Franti, Rodney Crowell, Dave Mason, String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Inner Circle, Alabama Shakes, Sonny Landreth, JJ Cale, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, Charlie Musselwhite, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Toots and the Maytals, Leftover Salmon, Black Uhuru, David Bromberg and many more!
